In the old days noses were packed with long pieces of ribbon gauze to stop the bleeding. In the modern day nose surgery we use the most up to date nasal packing system available. These packs are absorbable. Therefore there is no need for the packs to be removed.

Once the patient starts to douche their nose with saline the packs disintegrate and fall out on their own. In my practice I like to use these types of gels as they are much more comfortable for the patient. I also use a medical grade thin silicone nasal splint that is secure with only one suture. Once this suture is removed the splint comes out very easily. The plaster cast also comes of easily with little or no discomfort. The whole procedure takes less than five minutes and most patients comment that it was not as bad as they thought!
