What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (such as Restlyane, Perlane, Esthelis, Juvaderm) is a glycoprotein which strongly binds water and which is found in the skin of all mammals, including humans.

This is a purified form of Hyaluronic acid produced from bacterial fermentation. It can be injected into the uppermost layers of the skin to soften wrinkles, Crows feet, smile, frown lines and to create volume in the lips, or smooth the appearance of shallow acne scarring.

What do Hyaluronic Acid treatments involve?

No skin test is necessary. Treatment consists of 1 or 2 sessions 2-8 weeks apart during which tiny amounts of Hyaluronic Acid are injected into the upper most layers of the skin to smooth certain skin contours or into the lips to make them fuller.

Most people choose to receive a repeat treatment within 4-12 months. Without treatment the correction gradually fades. If treatment is ceased the skin will gradually return to its original appearance. Based on studies 5 % of the population have demonstrated an immediate breakdown of the Hyaluronic Acid product.

Are the treatments painful?

A local anaesthetic cream can be used to deaden sensation in the areas to be treated. Local anaesthetic blocks to deaden the lips are available if required. Ice is applied after treatment to reduce discomfort.

Are there any complications or side effects?

The side effects for Hyaluronic Acid injection may include swelling, redness and occasional bruising. Swelling occurs because Hyaluronic Acid attracts the bodies own water to the area. Other side effects may include minor lumps, itching or tenderness, which usually resolve quickly.

Hyaluronic Acid is not suitable for those who are pregnant or planning to fall pregnant within the next four months or if you are breast-feeding.
