After the Surgery

Most patients report little or no pain after nasal surgery and the discomfort is easily controlled with mild pain medication. Your nose will be congested for a few days and you must not blow your nose for at least one week. Dr Shahidi will give you antibiotics and pain management if required. If you wear glasses, they must not put pressure on your nose for the first 4-6 weeks.

Internal nasal splints will be removed 7-10 days after the operation and the external splint will be removed at the same time. You should expect to experience some swelling and bruising around your eyes. Cold compresses will help reduce this and make you feel more comfortable. Most of the bruising subsides in about three to four weeks and any remaining bruises can be covered with make-up after a week.

Don’t be surprised if you experience some emotional turmoil immediately after surgery. This is called “post-surgical blues” and it occurs in many people. The nice thing about nasal surgery is that your nose will continue to improve for several months to a year after surgery. It takes at least 6-12 months for most of the swelling to subside.
